This allows the Skybox to sit neatly in the center of the roof with just a bit of overhang on the front of the vehicle which allows the rear hatch to open fully and my 5-foot 11-inch self can walk underneath without banging my head. On my Forester, the distance between the center of the front crossbar to the center of the rear crossbar is 32 and one-half inches. I had to move both the clamps and the rear cross bar. Now loosen the rear crossbar and slide it forward to meet the rear clamps or slide the rear clamp to meet the crossbar. Now loosely clamp the front of the box in place. Put the Skybox Lo on top of the front crossbar and slide the front clamps as far backward as possible inside the box, this will move the box forward giving you the clearance to open the rear hatch fully. Suggestions for installation: Move the front crossbar as far forward as possible. Because 15 cubic feet of space on the roof is a very big attic for any car. Because I can fully open the rear hatch with the Skybox Lo on the car. Because I can open the Skybox Lo in my garage and load it without having to move the car outside. Why the Skybox Lo? Because it will fit in the garage while on top of my car. Q: How do I tell the difference between SkyBox Pro, SkyBox Carbonite and SkyBox?Ī: The only difference between the Skyboxes is the look of the lid and the price. Drilling holes to mount a box in some other way could compromise its design, not to mention, void the warranty. The mounting holes in all of the gear boxes are positioned to optimize durability and compatibility with appropriate crossbar spreads. Q: Can I drill new mounting holes in my gear box?Ī: This is not a good idea. We have also redesigned the mounting hardware to fit a variety of different crossbar shapes. Light weight is important because the lighter the box is, the more weight you can put into it because vehicles can only support so much weight on the roof.Ī: We have done extensive testing on factory racks to see which ones are strong enough to handle a luggage box. We use ABS instead of fiberglass because it is lighter and less expensive, while still being really strong (=maximum value).
